Enhancing Integrity at uWaterloo — Bruce Mitchell & Faye Schultz

The Academic Integrity Office is coordinating a collaborative approach to enhance integrity as a core value at the University of Waterloo for students, staff, and faculty.  Various academic support units in cooperation with faculty and student representatives created an “Academic Integrity Fact Sheet for Students” that was distributed at the start of the academic term in September 2011.  In October, a set of four posters and associated videos were created under the banner of “Work. Study. Play. with Integrity”.  A few weeks afterwards, Athletics and Recreational Services published a “Student-Athlete Mission Statement and Values” poster that highlights the importance of integrity and related values, and linked it to the overall tagline of  “Work. Study. Play. With Integrity.”  We are looking forward to other academic support units following up with initiatives to promote integrity which are specific to their activities.

We are writing here to invite your advice related to a proposed “Academic Integrity Fact Sheet for Faculty” which will focus upon the role of faculty as course instructors.  Specifically, we are asking you to share with us: (1) initiatives you have taken in your own courses to promote academic integrity, and/or (2) initiatives by other instructors to enhance academic integrity.  Such examples and experiences will guide the development of the fact sheet.  Later, a second fact sheet focused on “integrity in research” will be developed for faculty.

We look forward to hearing from you, and learning about what you have been doing to encourage a high standard of academic integrity at the University of Waterloo.

Bruce Mitchell & Faye Schultz, Office of Academic Integrity
